SAD STORY.... HOME WANTED
Sunday 13th January we went to Lefkara. We decided to take Rhea for a walk down the tracks towards the dam. About 20 minutes into our walk we heard a pitiful howling and found a small puppy (about 6 weeks old) abandoned on the side of the track. She was curled up and obviously scared stiff. I thought it was strange that there should only be one around as if one had been dumped then surely a litter would be. We stood for a while listening and about 100 yards away in some gorse heard another puppy howling in distress. Phil went to find it and found him wrapped up in gorse with its head stuff between a fork of a bush. He dislodged it. Well, having now got 2 puppies wrapped in my fleece we saw a truck parked in the bushes further down the track. So, we walked towards it but after a few feet, parked at the side of the road was a hunter. He had just shot his dog (beagle we think) He saw us with the puppies and chose to ignore us. We can only assume the dog was the pups mother and they were next for the bullet. We took them back to the car with us. It became obvious that the pup in the gorse was not responding well and when we got them home discovered that the poor soul could not walk. Its legs were withered and of no use. The other pup (bitch) was bigger but its hind legs were slightly withered and not the right shape but she got around quite well and was alert and responsive. After giving them some mashed up food and water we decided to call the emergency vet and we took them down to her. The little boy was beyond help. He had rickets so bad that he would never be able to walk so we had him put to sleep. The little bitch, the vet felt, had a good chance of being able to lead a normal life. She has slight rickets on her back legs, her teeth are bad (baby teeth) all through them not getting enough vitamins as they developed. However, she runs about quite well although unsteady on her hind legs. The vet thinks they will strengthen once she gets the right food and excersise. So, Kara (her name now) is with us at present. We will be looking for a good, understanding home for her. Kara is eating well, had a lovely warm bath, de-flead and ticks removed. UPDATE >>>>She has since been back to the vet and is making great progress and is running around now and her legs are stronger. She has had her first innoculation. If you can give this lovely dog a home please contact me on 99853470. After her awful start to life she deserves a loving home. Thankyou.

Sad Story now a happy one!
Hi everyone
Just to let you know that the little puppy we rescued just 10 days ago has put on weight and is now using all 4 paws to run around! Better still, we had 3 offers of a home and today she went to live in Limassol with a lovely man called Avangalos, his wife, 3 other dogs they rescued and a rescue cat. Kara now has a big house to live in, a big garden, lots of playmates and owners with big hearts. We cannot thank them enough for giving Kara the chance of a lovely life and taking her into their hearts.

Hi
Her name was Kara. Rhea is our own dog. I hope I may be able to help find many more homes for un-wanted and un-loved animals.

Hello Kirsty,
Cyprus, like all other countries, is a place where all sorts of people live. Unfortunately, some groups of people, like hunters, are more likely to have grown up without the compassion for animals, which would lead them to discard any dog that doesn't do its job properly as if it were an inanimate object. Having said that, I know of many hunters who own wonderful dogs and love them to bits, even going as far as spending a fortune to construct special heated kennels for them. I'm a Cypriot who has lived in the UK for three years and I can put my hand on my heart and say that I don't think Cypriots are bad dog owners. If anything, most dog owners are overly protective of their dogs and pamper them constantly, in a shrilly/happy sort of way (which I don't really agree with but that's a different story ), and are willing to do anything to make sure their dogs are happy. Unfortunately, we have some really bad cases, especially when it comes to animal poisoning, but these are very slowly decreasing and are usually shunned by a community. Hope this helps!
